Members of the Isaaq clan met and greeted the leader of the United Somali Congress (USC), General Mohamed Farah Aideed (Aidid), in the Somali capital in 1992.
This is a historical gathering between the supporters of the Somali National Movement (SNM) and USC — the two rebel groups who toppled Dictator Mohamed Siad Bare in 1991.
SNM played a key role in the formation of Somaliland following the collapse of Somalia’s central government.
USC was predominantly from the Hawiye clan, who inhabit most regions in southern Somalia, while SNM had its support among the Isaaq populous.
